In order for students to have the best opportunity to achieve academic success, it is imperative that they attend school daily.
A student's absence shall be excused for the following reasons:
Personal illness (Education Code 48205)
Quarantine under the direction of a county or city health officer (Education Code 48205) (cf. 5112.2 ‐ Exclusions from Attendance)
Medical, dental, optmetrical, or chiropractic appointment (Education Code 48205)
Attendance at funeral services for a member of the immediate family, which shall be limited to one day if the service is conducted in California or three days if the service is conducted out of state (Education Code 48205). Immediate family shall be defined as mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, spouse, son/son‐in‐law, daughter/daughter‐in‐law, brother, sister, or any relative living in the student's immediate household (Education Code 45194, 48205)
Jury duty in the manner provided by law (Education Code 48205)
The illness or medical appointment during school hours of a child to whom the student is the custodial parent (Education Code 48205)
Upon advance written request by the parent/guardian and the approval of the principal or designee, justifiable personal reasons including, but not limited to: (Education Code 48205)
Appearance in court
Attendance at a funeral service
Observation of a holiday or ceremony of his/her religion
Attendance at religious retreats not to exceed four hours per semester
Attendance at parent/guardian's service member pre‐deployment, deployment and returning from deployment activities not to exceed four days per school year.
Participation in religious exercises or to receive moral and religious instruction in accordance with district policy (Education Code 46014)
In such instances, the student shall attend at least the minimum school day.
The student shall be excused for this purpose on no more than four days per school month.
When a student is absent from school, a telephone call from the parents or guardian to the school by 11:00 a.m. that day is required giving the following information:
Parent or guardian name
Student's name
Reason for absence
Estimated date of return
Whether assignments are needed If a student has been absent and no phone call has been made, then the student MUST bring a WRITTEN NOTE stating the date, reason, days of absence and parent signature to the main office no later than five school days from the absence.
If your child has cold or flu‐like symptoms, such as fever, headache, extreme tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, your child will need to stay home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have a fever without the use of fever‐reducing medications, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen. The Center for Disease Control defines a fever as anything over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8 degrees Celsius) when measured by mouth.
Note: Students who are absent repeatedly will be referred to the school administration, which may result in a referral to the school attendance review board (SARB).
